Sports Travel: London Olympics 2012

One of the perks of being a winning athlete is having the chance to travel to different places, to different countries to compete for your sport.
As for the Philippines, “a lean team” of athletes gets to have that opportunity for the 2012 London Olympics. Knowing the records of these athletes in their sport can make one hope that perhaps the Philippines might just be able to finally grab a gold this year. For more information on these 11 athletes now in London, you can check out the video below from TV 5 which has been made available in YouTube.
Just for the record, the Philippines has won a total of nine medals. Our highest ones: silver medals for boxing. Thanks to Anthony Villanueva who won it through his fists in the Men’s Featherweight division in the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. Our second silver was once again won through the fists; Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco settled for silver in the Men’s flyweight division in the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.
Here’s an interesting piece of trivia: The Philippines first sent athletes to compete at the Olympic Games in 1924. It is the first country to compete and win a medal in Southeast Asia!
We hope the Philippine delegation will not only win medals in this year’s Olympics but they will also get to improve more on their sport and yes, somehow despite the competition just have the chance to also enjoy their Olympic or sports travel 🙂
